Why We're here

Our History, Our Future

Main Street itself reflects Vincennes' extraordinary legacy. The historic district runs from 1st to 6th Streets, and is home to authentic buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s, each holding their own stories. Boutiques, art galleries, and gift shops operate within these storied walls, but the past is never crowded out. Full of boutique shops, eateries, small businesses, and varied architecture, the downtown Main Street remains the place to be in Vincennes.

Vincennes became a designated affiliate Main Street through the Indiana OCRA program in 2015, with the initiative centered on enhancing the value of Indiana's oldest historic Main Street and developing a venue for community-wide involvement to invest in the Main Street area. That proud designation as Indiana's First Main Street reflects not just a geographic distinction, but a deep commitment to honoring the past while building toward the future.

Key highlights of downtown Main Street's history include:

1732 - Vincennes established as a French fur trading post, making it Indiana's oldest European settlement.
1800 - Vincennes becomes the capital of the Indiana Territory under Governor William Henry Harrison.
1804 - Indiana's first newspaper, The Indiana Gazette, is published in Vincennes.
1816 - Indiana achieves statehood; Vincennes retains its place as a hub of commerce and culture.
1800s & early 1900s - Main Street's brick commercial buildings take shape, many of which still stand today.
2015 - Vincennes is designated an Indiana Main Street community, recognizing it as the heart of downtown revitalization.
